The Edmonton-based choir group has been trying to get their ‘Seen the True Light’ concert off the ground since early 2020. Then it was canceled for the second year in a row due to global events you may have heard of. Named after a phrase fragment from the liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, an Eastern church service, the concert features an eclectic program featuring works by artists such as Dolly Parton, Frank Sinatra, Handel and Wolinsky. is. more. Plus, the young Ukrainian baritone choir conductor, Melanie Tajon, introduces Yury Frikhorash, who we think will soon make an impact on the music world.

“He’s just starting to establish himself and I always say I need to hire him while I can still afford to hire him.”The Ukrainian Art Song, Toronto, 2019 Since meeting him at an event called Project, we’ve been planning concerts together, Yurii is from L’viv, Ukraine, and I’m sure he’s someone I’d like to collaborate with again, so I took notes.

Had it not been for the flight cancellations, it is quite possible that Hryhorash would be fighting a war now. The singer was on his way out of Lviv to perform for five months on a cruise ship, but instead of going directly to Miami on a later flight, he was immediately redirected to Poland. Less than an hour later, the border was closed, requiring all Ukrainian men between the ages of 18 and 60 to remain within the border.

“There he sang for five months on that cruise ship before finally settling in a Polish town where he did choral work and some small roles in their opera c.company,” says Turgeon. “He’s rebuilding himself, he’s kind of the new kid in town.”

Hryhorash will be in Edmonton a week before the show, and his dance card is filled with seven days of activities. He has taught vocal master classes at his King’s College and Concordia, and plans to teach another class at the U of A on an interim basis. Of course, he will bring his experience as an opera, jazz and choral singer to a diverse and colorful program featuring choirs, pianist Dr. Lynn Reger, organist Dr. Marnie Giesbrecht and cellist. We also have an intense rehearsal. Josephine Van Lier, trumpeter Joel Gray, recorder Dorothy Bayer.

“This is part of my approach,” said Turgeon. “It’s important to appeal to a wide audience, especially if you’re not a choir or classical music aficionado. was really fun,” he says. There’s a wonderful choral arrangement of Dolly Parton’s Light of a Clear Blue Morning, and Uli’i did a lot of Frank Sinatra, having had a significant career in jazz before moving to opera. I wanted to mark his footsteps as a musician up until now, and I wanted to show him singing everything from the intricate Rossini arias to The Barber of Seville to Sinatra. ”

The Kappella Kyrie Slavic Chamber Choir actively supports the recent influx of Ukrainian refugees into the city. Last June, they partnered with Richard His Eaton His Singers for a peace and reconciliation concert at Winspear, where grocery gifts were converted into useful items such as his cards and distributed to the community. We raised a lot of money. This time, we’re giving new immigrants a specific code so they can buy tickets for $5.

“I believe we allow up to 100 sales,” says Turgeon. “We hope that they will come to these kinds of events and make them accessible so that they can feel a part of what they have left behind. I just want to let you know that I’m there for you.”
