Firefighters rescue a driver from an overturned car after hitting a parked flatbed ramp

Firefighters used special gear to extract a driver from an overturned vehicle after it crashed into the ramp of a flatbed truck that had stopped at the intersection of Merivale and Bentley streets on Friday.

The Ottawa Fire Department was called shortly after 5pm.

The vehicle flipped over onto the driver’s side and was unstable.
The team first stabilized the vehicle using crib straps and ratchet straps. The upward facing passenger side door was propped open and strapped to allow the team to make contact with the driver.
The rear hatch was also pinned shut, and rescuers decided the best course of action was to get the patient out through the glass moonroof.
The driver was covered with a canvas tarp to protect it from debris while the moonroof was cut away. J.The jagged edges were also covered with a canvas tarp.
At 17:28 pm, firefighters rescued the driver from the vehicle.
The Ottawa Emergency Medical Service took over the driver’s care.
The patient, a man in his 20s, was transferred in stable condition to a trauma center in Ottawa.
