Canada sees highest gang-related homicide rate in 16 years in 2021: StatCan – National
Statistics Canada data show that homicides will increase in 2021, with nearly a quarter of the homicides being gang-related.
There were 788 murders in the country last year, up 3% from 2020. Of those, 184 were gang-related.
This marks the highest rate of gang-related homicides since 2005.
Firearms were the most common weapon used in murders, according to the agency.
Saskatchewan has the highest murder rate, up 9% from 2020.
The proportion of indigenous victims across the country remained disproportionately high at six times that of non-indigenous peoples.
Blacks and South Asians were also more likely to be victims of homicide.
