Police kidnap man, charge him with attack in central Edmonton

A 39-year-old man faces kidnapping and assault charges after allegedly assaulting a woman in central Edmonton.

At approximately 1:40 p.m. Tuesday, Edmonton police were called to the 114th and 107th Streets area. An 18-year-old woman was getting off the bus when a man grabbed her from behind. Police said the man dragged the woman out into the street, after which two witnesses ran to her rescue.

A witness helped the woman, took her to a nearby convenience store, and called 911.
After images of the suspect were released Thursday, investigators received information about his whereabouts and he was arrested.
“We would like to thank the citizens for intervening in the attack and preventing further harm to this woman,” said Thomas Marsh of the Det. Northeast Investigative Response Team.
“Likewise, we thank the media and the public for sharing the suspect’s photo and providing information, both of which ultimately led to this timely arrest.”
Bereket Berahenemeskel, 39, has been charged with kidnapping and assault.
