Tributes are pouring in from all quarters of academia following the death of Caroline Andrew, a prominent University of Ottawa Professor Emeritus, leading researcher on women and politics, and a prominent supporter of the Franco-Ontarian community .

“We are saddened by her passing and extend our condolences to her family, friends and colleagues,” the Canadian Association for Political Science wrote in a notice posted Friday.

Andrew was the first woman to chair the CPSA, and during her long career at the University of Ottawa, she served as Dean of the University’s Department of Social Sciences, as Full Professor in the Department of Political Science, and as a Director of the Center for Governance.
The university described Andrew as “a nationally recognized authority on urban and feminist studies, and cultural diversity.”

Andrew was invested as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2015 for his academic work on cultural diversity, urban and feminist studies, and civic engagement in non-profit and community-based organizations.
“Caroline Andrew is a leading voice in Ottawa’s academic and social activism,” reads her Order of Canada biography. “A former Dean of Social Sciences at the University of Ottawa, she co-founded the University’s Women’s Studies Program and is known for her work on urban studies and feminist studies. Volunteering with organizations such as the Lower Town Community Resource Center and advocating for newcomers, women and inner-city residents, she also advocates for better immigration integration, reduced crime, and Franco-Ontarianism. has supported civic initiatives that support the language rights of
Andrew received a BA in Political Science from the University of British Columbia in 1964, an MA in Social Sciences from Laval University in 1966, and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto in 1975.
