Sainz set the fastest time of 1’40.983 seconds in the third qualifying session, overtaking F1 champion Max Verstappen by only 0.072 seconds. This season Ferrari was the seventh pole in 10 races, but before Sainz’s surprise run, Sainz’s teammate Charles Leclerc took pole position.

“I didn’t expect it,” Sainz told his team on the radio.

Leclerc will start in 3rd place ahead of Sergio Perez in the second Red Bull.

Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton finished fifth in the home race as Mercedes seemed to make progress on the issue of high-speed bouncing. His teammate George Russell was eighth.
