Svenson had an eagle in the second hole of par 5 and went with seven birdies and bogies.
The Canadian had a two-shot clubhouse lead in Ricardo Gouveia, Portugal.
Originally from Sally, British Columbia, Svensson is 98th in the FedEx Cup.
28-year-old Svenson finished in the top 10 twice this season and achieved the best result in 7th place Thailand at the Sony Open in Hawaii in January.
The Barbasol Championship is an opposite field event and many of the top players on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour are currently playing the Scottish Open.
