Food Bank Friday: Summerland Food Bank and Resource Center – Okanagan

Things slowed down at the Summerland Food Bank and Resource Center during the pandemic, but as the world has reopened, the customer list is growing.

“Over the three summer months of June, July and August, 25 new households joined the service. It was a significant increase,” said Hal Roberts. , Resource Coordinator for the Summerland Food Bank and Resource Center.

The Summerland Food Bank does more than just fill the cupboards and refrigerators of those who need a little extra help. The pantry program also shares meals with Summerland schools, and Roberts said the backpack program will continue into the new year. In addition to that, it is also a service hub.

We provide services directly to Summerland residents, including the Pathways Addictions Resource Centre, Family Support, BC Mental Wellness Centre, and Okanagan College Free Literacy Program.

“Actually, about 14 agencies are coming in right now to use our office space to meet with Summerland residents,” says Roberts.

“So there are resources provided to residents rather than having them have to go down the road to Penticton or Kelowna.”

Now they are gearing up for a busy holiday season and are now accepting registrations for Holiday Humpers.

“We anticipate that we may need to serve 150 households,” says Roberts.
