A best practices guide for tower cranes has been released by home builders and industry insiders.Canadian Business Journal

Vaughan, Nov. 16, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Ontario Residential Builders Council (RESCON) and its industry partners release comprehensive best practices guide as part of their ongoing commitment to continuous improvement Did. This guide is used by builders and trade contractors when assembling, operating, and dismantling tower cranes.

Formally called “Construction Industry Code of Practice: Safe Use of Tower Cranes,” this document outlines the mechanical, electrical, and structural inspections required before assembling a tower crane on a construction site, and the methodology to be followed during assembly. and safe practices. Functional and operational tests required before operating the crane.

“Health and safety are our top priorities. By using a continuous improvement model, we will continue to focus on safety in the homebuilding sector,” said RESCON, Chairman of RESCON’s Safety Committee. VP Andrew Pariser said. “Documenting best practices that go beyond legal and regulatory requirements can lead to meaningful safety improvements. Codes of practice are drawn from various associations, engineers, suppliers and health and safety professionals. It was compiled with the opinions of

RESCON and its members, the Ontario Formwork Association (OFA) and James Wilkinson, P.Eng. His three from Wilkinson Technical Services Inc., along with RESCON’s Crane Safety and Health and Safety Committees, played a key role in the development of the guide.

This guide covers pre-assembly inspection and review, initial project assembly, and safe operating practices including climbing and dismantling procedures. It outlines the inspections that need to be performed, the documentation requirements and technical inspections required during the pre-construction and post-construction stages, and what is required if the project has multiple cranes. There is a checklist of documents that the contractor and project management team must keep on the project.

“To safely operate a tower crane on a construction site requires the cooperation of everyone involved in the project, from the crane operator operating the equipment to the person overseeing the project,” says Wilkinson. “We want to make sure everyone in the industry understands the requirements and necessary procedures that must be followed, including the mandatory documentation that must be maintained to ensure construction site safety.”

This guide is not intended to replace regulatory requirements or any applicable codes or standards, but it does help builders understand the proper procedures and required documentation that must be followed. The primary scope applies to tower cranes, but the general hoisting and rigging practices and procedures described in the guide may also apply to other hoisting equipment on your project. The Code of Practice requires a significant expansion of the existing role of professional engineers in the design, inspection and monitoring of tower cranes in construction projects.

“High-rise molding companies are leaders when it comes to health and safety,” said OFA Executive Director Dennis Cancian. It helps to make sure that all parties are aware of the rules and procedures, and that responsibilities are made known to all parties.”

This guide will be distributed to all RESCON members and forwarded to the Institute for Infrastructure Health and Safety and the Department of Labor, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. RESCON is also planning a crane safety event in January.
