Canada, South Korea to strengthen ties to produce electric cars to compete with China – National

South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol says Canada is a natural match to ramp up production of electric vehicles.

During a day’s visit to Ottawa to meet with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the President praised Canada’s research in natural resources and artificial intelligence.

He said these strengths complement his country’s efforts in digital technology and semiconductors.

The two leaders agreed to deepen cooperation on key minerals used in electric vehicle batteries as the two countries aim to reduce emissions to combat climate change.

“Mr. Yun and I discussed ways to work together in various areas, including essential minerals, batteries for electric vehicles, and emerging technologies such as AI,” Trudeau told reporters.

Canada has many important minerals such as lithium, cobalt and nickel, which are currently used to make EV batteries, and the government is trying to help producers and processors to scale up production. .

“Canada, a world leader in minerals production, and South Korea, a major semiconductor and battery manufacturer, each play an important role in the global supply chain,” Yun said through an interpreter.

“The governments and companies of the two countries will work together to create a cooperative framework for the mineral resources sector to respond to the shocks arising from the changing world order,” Yun added.

China is now the dominant global supplier of critical minerals used in EVs. Yun said finding alternative suppliers is of strategic importance for both countries.

Canada and South Korea are still working on strategies for the Asia-Pacific region, including how to balance trade and human rights.

Prime Minister Trudeau said it was important to find a balance when it came to China so that we could not drive wedges between nations.

Several Liberal Party ministers are heading to Seoul next month to flesh out trade and cultural exchange opportunities.
