Canada has pledged $100 million to fund what Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has touted as the country’s first federal five-year plan to support the 2SLGBT community.
Prime Minister Trudeau said 75% of the funds will be donated to community organizations focused on diversity and inclusion.
The news comes on the final day of the Pride celebrations in Ottawa, capped off with the first in-person parade after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19.
Minister for Women and Gender Equality Marcy Yen, along with Prime Minister Trudeau, welcomed the action plan, saying the funds are for “all those who are raising their voices and fighting for acceptance”.
The strategy, she says, is the result of years of consultation and research with members of the LGBT and dual-minded community.
She said more than $5 million in funding will be used to launch awareness campaigns to “keep our communities safe and educate the wider population.”
