Canada finalizes FIBA World Cup qualifying match vs Dominican Republic roster

NBA stars Shai Gilgeous Alexander, Kelly Olynyk and Dwight Powell will make their way to Canada in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers with the Dominican Republic on Friday.

The game, played at Hamilton’s First Ontario Center, can be seen on Sportsnet and SNNOW from 7pm.

Canada and the Dominican Republic, along with the Bahamas and the US Virgin Islands (Canada faces on the road on July 4th), belong to Group C of the opening round of qualifying. The two games this weekend make up the third and final window of this qualifying round. Canada has a 4-0 record and has already secured a spot in the next round.

The match on Friday also shows that the COVID-19 pandemic will bring the Canadian senior men’s team to the home ground for the first time in more than two years.

The FIBA World Cup will be hosted by the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia in August and September 2023.

Last May, Canada Basketball announced a group of 14 core players who promised to play for the national team for the next three years as Canada competes in the World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics.
