To Christine M. Hall, Associated Press.

Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain spent months learning the songs made famous by George Jones and Tammy Wynette and working with a vocal coach to make the pilgrimage to Nashville in preparation for their upcoming series, George & Tammy. did the recording.

“The studio where we recorded was adjacent to the cemetery where George and Tammy are,” said Shannon. “We go see them. What we did was kind of like this kind of mental odyssey.”

The limited-edition six-part series, which premieres on Showtime on December 2nd, will stand out from the crowd as they struggle with the pressures of fame and addiction, infusing real-life pain, love, and heartache into unforgettable emotional performances. Bring down the curtain on life. Chastain, whose production company Freckle Films helped produce the series, said he saw videos of her performing live and was drawn to their story, saying that being on stage together before and after marriage was real. and sometimes messy.

“I was very interested in learning about what feeds on what’s happening on stage,” said the Oscar-winning actor.

Wynette died in 1998 at the age of 55 from heart failure after years of chronic health problems. Jones died in 2013 at the age of 81. Originally planned as a feature film, screenwriter Abe Sylvia adapted the series based on the autobiography of Jones and Wynette’s daughter, Georgette Jones.

At the red carpet premiere in Los Angeles, Sylvia said, “One of the big themes of the show is that we’re always looking for someone to offer salvation to those of us who are in love. It’s impossible. “What George and Tammy see in each other is someone who might be able to save them. And that’s the show’s ongoing theme.”

Chastain, who won an Oscar for her role as TV evangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, found strength in another Tammy story.

“Nashville was really tough on women,” Chastain said. “And she showed up so bravely. Think about it. She showed up as a single mom and in this incredible voice, I was like, ‘This is what I’m going to do.'”

Shannon had an equally grim role in portraying Jones at its lowest, as his self-destructive tendencies had a tailwind for his marriage and his career. He was nicknamed “No Show Jones” for his frequent failure to attend concerts and refusal to perform.

“George has a very complicated relationship with singing,” said Shannon. “I think he likes singing. I think it was in. I think he was upset that he had to sing for dinner, so to speak. He didn’t want to make it conditional.”

The actors even had the chance to step into George and Tammy’s shoes, with Chastain wearing Wynette’s original stage outfit. However, Shannon discovered that he was taller than Jones during a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, so the wardrobe department decided that Nudie, originally designed for Jones by famed designer Nudie Cohn, had a suit of his. Got him a replica.

However, Shannon was taken aback when she had to literally dump her expensive suit on the side of the road during one of Jones’ drunken scenes.

“It shows the lifestyle that George lived,” said Shannon. “He was so design-obsessed, he loved fashion, he loved decorating.

But the biggest challenge for the actors was singing live during filming in front of hundreds of extras.

“They want to get your take, your vocal take, so they sing a cappella,” said Shannon. “So if you have[in-ear monitors]you can hear the track, but the extras are just watching you sing a cappella.”

“It was incredibly scary to do that,” Chastain added.
