Gray Cup celebrated among 1500 Saskatchewan students at Youth Rally

Saskatchewan is ready to host the Gray Cup on Sunday, and the week is full of activity as we head into the big game. Tuesday was all about the kids.

More than 1,500 students from northern and central Saskatchewan filled Saskatoon’s Merlis Belsher Arena for the Gray Cup Festival Youth Rally.

The two-hour event featured live music, entertainment, motivational messages from athletes and a trophy reveal.

Organizers said the event was enthusiastic and celebratory while at the same time motivating children through difficult times.

For Saskatchewan Marathon champion Tarrant Cross Child, who was invited as a keynote speaker at Wednesday’s rally, it was a chance to inspire the next generation.

“Many of these young people may never hold a Gray Cup. explained.

“So every young person who comes here today may not raise the cup on his journey, but he believes in things in his own realm. Whether it’s family,” he added.

He said it’s important to show older generations to be there for guidance, community and support, especially during difficult times.

“Every young person who comes here today has a story. Each has a journey to get to one of these seats. So I hope I can inspire them through this gathering of young people,” he said.

The event was hosted by former Saskatchewan Roughrider Neil Hughes. He said football is part of the state structure.

“Football is big in this state, and the Saskatchewan Roughriders have a big voice. I think it’s very important, and hopefully some of these kids come back with a different perspective on life situations,” Hughes explained.

Roughriders CEO Craig Reynolds said many of the upcoming events will be free and they want the festival to be accessible.

“We want as many people as possible to attend the Gray Cup Festival,” he said.

The Gray Cup Trophy departs Saskatoon on Wednesday morning and heads to Regina.
