BMO Center expansion marks completion of massive steel structure, Canadian Business Journal

CALGARY, Alberta, November 3, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) and the Calgary Stampede are pleased to announce that the steel structure for the BMO Center expansion will be completed this week. The billet is set in place. In just 11 months, the crew has installed 9,000 metric tons of steel to form the structure of his 565,000-square-foot extension of the BMO Center. The expansion now stands taller than the neighboring GMC Stadium and Stampede Park’s Saddledome.

The $500 million expansion, with matching generous funding from the Government of Canada, the Government of Alberta and the City of Calgary, will double the center’s capacity for meetings, conferences and events. With over 100,000 square feet of new exhibit space, 38 new meeting rooms, two new ballrooms totaling 70,000 square feet, and a dramatic central gathering space supported by Canada’s largest indoor fireplace, BMO Center will become a province I guess. -A state-of-the-art venue showcasing the best in both technology and Western hospitality.

Calgary Stampede Chief Executive Officer Joel Cowley said: “We can’t wait to open the doors of the largest convention center in Western Canada. Conferences for June 2024 and beyond are already booked, and there is already great interest in our remarkable new gathering space.”

The steel that makes up the massive structure was manufactured at seven steel mills in Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan. In the ballroom, steel spans reach a maximum length of 180 feet and a depth of 19 feet (the length and depth of an Olympic pool), creating an impressive column-free space. The building is also designed to support up to four times the load of a typical modular building, allowing it to host any type of event imaginable. In fact, the exhibition hall’s loading capacity allows fully loaded semi-trucks to be driven inside the building.

CMLC President and CEO Kate Thompson said: “We successfully navigated a volatile market and challenging supply chain, and achieved this important project milestone on time. Seeing it take shape is a very positive indicator of the great things yet to come. Come to the region.”

Designed by an award-winning team of architects from Stantec, Populous and S2 Architecture, the BMO Center expansion will create a heartwarming and unforgettable experience for generations to come. PCL Construction and M3 Development Management expertly led the delivery of the project with the support of the contractor and transaction team. RJC Engineers has worked with Magnusson Klemencic Associates (MKA) and Walters Group on the installation of steel structures.

“This is an exciting milestone in a major urban shaping project that has been expertly managed by CMLC and the entire project team. It represents an important step in furthering Calgary’s standing, advancing Calgary’s economic resilience and position on the world stage, and realizing its vision of the culture and entertainment district, and of our downtown. transformation.”

With the steel structure complete, the crew turned their attention to completing the building’s skin and weathering the structure before moving inside to install drywall, elevators, electrical systems, and finishes. increase. The BMO Center expansion will officially open in June 2024.
