179 killed in BC poison supply in October

At least 179 lives were lost in BC’s supply of toxic drugs in October, according to preliminary toxicology findings from the BC Coroners Service.

That’s a 14% drop from October 2021 deaths, but a 4% increase from the previous month, when 172 people had a fatal overdose.

A total of 1,827 people have died from toxic drugs so far in 2022. That’s just nine fewer deaths compared to the same period last year.

Three of those who died in October were under the age of 19. The majority of the other deaths (150) were fairly evenly distributed between ages 19 and her 59. Another 22 of him were in his 60’s and 3 were in his 70’s. The age of the latter is unknown.

According to health officials, most of the fatal overdoses in October occurred at Fraser Health (55) and Vancouver Coastal Health (53). In addition, there were 28 deaths each in Island Health and Inland Health, and 15 deaths in Northern Health.

Vancouver continues to have the highest mortality rate, at 74.4 per 100,000 people. Next worst was in the Northwest he had 67.7 per 100,000, in the Northern Interior with 60.4 per 100,000, and in Thompson Caribou with 59.5 per 100,000. The lowest mortality rates were in Richmond at 13 per 100,000, North Shore/Coast Garibaldi at 13.2 per 100,000, and East Kooteneeds at 16.5 per 100,000.
