Blue Jays place Santiago Espinal in 10-day IL, recall Otto Lopez from Triple-A’s Buffalo

The Toronto Blue Jays added infielder Santiago Espinal to the 10-day injured list on Thursday due to a left oblique strain.

Espinal withdrew from Wednesday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies because of left-sided discomfort.

The 27-year-old Espinal, who was named to his first All-Star Game of the season, is .267/.322/.370 with seven homers and 51 RBIs this season.

Toronto also recalled infielder Otto Lopez from Triple-A Buffalo.

Lopez has appeared in 91 games for the Buffalo Bisons this year, slashing .297/.378/.415 along with three homers and 34 RBIs. He also appeared in three games against the Blue Jays as a defensive replacement/pinch runner.

The Blue Jays (84-65) started an important series Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Rays, giving them a two-game advantage over their division rivals to clinch the top wildcard spot. Watch live on Sportsnet and SN NOW.
