Raptors 905 coach trades aerospace research to NBA G League

Eric Khoury wants you to know that his first love was basketball. He played games in high school and college. He grew up in Toronto as a big Raptors fan.

But the amazing story of how the 33-year-old became the youngest-ever head coach of a Raptors farm team is one he’s often heard about. After all, he always focused on math, science, and engineering in school.

“The biggest question is why are you playing basketball?” Khoury says with a smile.

The head coach of the NBA’s G League team, the Raptors 905, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering and a Master’s degree in Applied Science with a study in experimental fluid dynamics from the University of Toronto Aerospace Institute. Ultimately he’s not the typical background for someone who picks up an NBA championship ring.

“I’m definitely a curious guy, so if there’s something, I want to understand how it works,” says Khoury, who is currently working on building a winning team. .

A decade ago, Khoury was completing a master’s degree in tracking moving particles in waterways when he noticed an article about how the NBA was experimenting with player-tracking technology across the league.

“There were similarities between particle tracking and replay tracking. Obviously they are very different in terms of application, but very similar in terms of technology.”

Having long thought that an engineering degree would open up a lot of possibilities for him, Corey decided to reach out to the Raptors via Twitter to see if they could help.

“Tweets became emails, emails became coffee, coffee became internships,” says Corey, who was eventually named director of analytics for the Raptors.

Khoury says he’s always been drawn to team sports and started transitioning to the coaching side about five years ago. As he got better, he was named an assistant coach and even helped the Raptors win their first-ever NBA championship.

His start in analytics has been compared to the hit movie “Moneyball,” which depicts how baseball’s Oakland Athletics leveraged big data to build a competitive team.

“Never seen it. I need to check it out,” he says.

After being named head coach of the 905 this summer, Cory attended a press conference where he was asked about his engineering background and how it applies to basketball.

He mentioned Sir Isaac Newton and the First Principles, which was probably the first time a basketball coach was featured in the media.

“The moment it came out of my mouth, I knew it was going to make headlines for sure.”

Khoury said analytics is becoming a focus in many sports, with teams constantly looking to find an edge. He hopes that others will be inspired by his story to pursue their own dreams if they also like sports.

“There are so many different paths to get into it, and that’s great. So if you’re as serious about math and science as I am, you can’t close the door.”
