Blue Jays’ Espinal out of Phillies game with left-sided discomfort

Toronto Blue Jays infielder Santiago Espinal was ejected Wednesday against the Philadelphia Phillies after complaining of left-sided discomfort, the team said.

Espinal started the game at second base, but was pinch hit by Cavan Biggio in the top of the seventh. It’s unclear when Espinal got injured, but he was 0-2 at bat before leaving the game.

Selected to his first All-Star Game of the season, Espinal is one of the Blue Jays’ key utility players, playing second, shortstop and third this season. In his 134 games played Wednesday, he batted . 268/. 324/.

The Blue Jays will next travel to Tampa for a four-game weekend series with the Rays.
