Benfica say Dynamo Kyiv unlikely to qualify for Champions League

Dynamo Kyiv’s unlikely bid to reach the group stage of the Champions League ended with Tuesday’s final hurdle after the Ukrainian side suffered a heavy defeat to Benfica in the qualifying play-offs.

Benfica won the second leg 3-0 in Lisbon thanks to goals from Nicolas Otamendi, Rafa Silva and David Neres, and won the first leg 2-0 in Lodz, Poland last week.

Dynamo, a big name in European football, has not played a match at home all year due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Champions League his league qualifying was the only match Dynamo played, beating Fenerbahçe and Sturm Graz to reach the final round.

The Ukrainian Football League kicked off its new season on Tuesday with Shakhtar Donetsk and Metalist 1925 drawing 0-0 inside Kyiv’s 65,500-capacity Olympic Stadium. Dynamo’s first league match is Sunday.

Ukraine will be represented in Thursday’s group stage draw in Istanbul via Shakhtar, who earned his place as the top of the Ukrainian league, which was abandoned last season due to the war.

As Dynamo head into the Europa League group stage, 1961 and 1962 European champions Benfica will participate in Thursday’s draw alongside Maccabi Haifa and Viktoria Plzen, who also qualified on Tuesday.
