Beekeeper loses 20,000 bees after herd flies in Amherstview, Ontario-Kingston

When the May flowers are in full bloom, the bees refine their surroundings for nectar and return them to the hive. But that wasn’t the case for amateur beekeeper Dennis Smith in Amherstview.

“On Tuesday, our bees decided to flock and leave the hive,” Smith said.

Smith owns a Loyalist acre farm, but admits that it’s his second summer as a beekeeper and he’s not an expert. He noticed something was wrong while taking care of a nearby farm on Tuesday.

“I noticed a lot of activity in the air and the bees spinning,” Smith said. “Thousands. I quickly knew what was going on. It was a flock and they were planning to leave.”

Smith believes he lost about 20,000 bees when the flock left the hive on Tuesday.

But not everything is lost. He said there are about 7,000 bees left and some queen cells that grow in about 8-10 days. When that happens, the population should return to the number he had by mid-summer.

Dr. Nigel Raine is a member of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at the University of Guelph. He says it’s not uncommon for bees to flock away from the hive.

“The bee colony senses lack of space in the hive and nesting ground and begins raising a new queen to support the flocking process,” Dr. Rain said in a zoom call with Global News. It was.

When that happens, they leave just as Smith’s bees left earlier this week.

As for Smith, he says he has contacted several apiaries in the last few days and has learned a lot about bees since then.

At least now he will be better prepared to prevent this from happening again.
