PHILADELPHIA — After Pittsburgh Pirates rookie O’Neill Cruz struck out in the third inning against Philadelphia on Friday night, O’Neill Cruz’s bat slipped out of his hand and into the stands.

That’s when things got sticky.

The lumber landed in Jenn Mehal’s lap in the back of the Phillies dugout. Being a Pirates fan, he Mehall was thrilled to get a souvenir. However, one inning later, a Pirates officer came to demand the bat back and offered another bat in the trade.

Mehhole and her friend Kathy Koller, who were in town from Reading to celebrate Koller’s birthday, didn’t want to give up their rare keepsake.

“We wanted to keep it, but security said it couldn’t be done,” said Mehall, who is from Western Pennsylvania.

Fans around the two women booed loudly.

To their dismay, Mehall and Koller had the good fortune to sit in front of former Phillies infielder and team ambassador Mickey Morandini. He presented the women with bats signed by Phillies star slugger Bryce Harper.

It was a nice gesture by Morandini, but the women seemed really upset that they couldn’t hold on to the bat they had caught.
