Bitcoin adoption continues to grow around the world, but education remains one of our biggest challenges. Financial literacy should be a right, but in many parts of the world people are denied this. Worse, they are misunderstood. But how do you tackle a subject like Bitcoin?In my experience, it’s her one-to-one connection that has had the strongest impact.
starts with trust
The foundation of a good relationship begins with trust. I learned this at a very young age. When I was a kid and worked at my parents’ newsstand in New York City, I often encountered customers from many different walks of life and had to navigate how to approach each situation. I realized that listening to customers is the only way to give them what they need. This job taught me patience and empathy, which allowed me to understand customer problems early on and find solutions to help them.
When I started Paxful in 2015, I handled the majority of customer service calls. I will never forget the first call from an enthusiastic customer who found my cell phone number on our website. This was an unbanked American woman who never had a bank account, never wanted one, but used Bitcoin to buy ads and buy things to make ends meet. I had to sell. I told her that if I could buy her gift card for a small amount, she could convert it to bitcoin. 20 minutes later she called me with her gift card in hand and I explained the process to her, our conversation lasted about 2 hours, but by the end she had her first transaction. A few days later, I started getting hundreds of calls. Eventually he had nearly 1,000 people guided through the site, with traders all over the world scrambling to fill orders. Global Bitcoin adoption begins and ends with education, but education requires patience, trust and excellent customer service.
Banking in our community
Through my bitcoin journey, I have come across amazing people working to improve education and bring about change around the world. Farida Nabrema, activist fighting for democracy in the country of Togo There are people like the Sulaiman brothers who are empowering communities in Nigeria with their coins, and Kal Kassa who is spreading the knowledge of Bitcoin to remote areas like Ethiopia. One of his interesting stories is from Paco de India. Paco de India is a man who made it his mission to visit 40 countries in 400 days and live primarily on Bitcoin. Along his journey, he spreads the public awareness of Bitcoin. He educates strangers on the street, hosts events for the community, and encourages people to use Bitcoin to access financial freedom. bottom up approach
The key to global Bitcoin adoption stems from its bottom-up approach. That’s why Paxful spends a lot of time in the field, meeting with users, hosting workshops, and organizing tours of his campus. My experience has taught me that the power of human connection should never be underestimated. Only with education, perseverance and understanding will we be able to reach mass adoption and fund everyone equally, wherever they are.
