United Way’s Coats for Kids and Families campaign continues this year, with the goal of collecting 9,000 winter jackets for families in need in Edmonton.
The campaign aims to ensure that people with limited resources have the appropriate winter outerwear they need to survive the cold winter months.

Extreme cold weather warning issued for areas east and south of Edmonton after overnight low of minus 30 degrees Celsius
The initiative was launched in 1992 in response to the overwhelming need for winter clothing among Edmontonians who cannot afford winter clothing.
The annual campaign runs until February. Once the items are collected, they are sorted, delivered to Edmonton social agencies, and distributed to those who really need them.
In 2021, 4,860 winter clothes were collected and distributed.
This year, United Way anticipates an even greater need as people deal with the COVID-19 pandemic and the inflationary fallout.
Some of the items you will need are:
- mens winter coat
- women winter coat
- kids winter coat
- Talk
- Mitt
- scarf
- snow pants
- winter boots
- insulated work clothes
- insulated work boots
The agency will not accept outerwear or clothing that is not intended for winter.
Donations can be brought to one of many drop-off locations in the Edmonton area. Coats can also be deposited at United Way’s InKind Exchange by appointment. Reservations can be made by calling 780-990-1000.
