Historic Tree in Toronto’s Osgood Hall Given ‘Temporary Reprieve’ by Metrolinx – Toronto

Five historic trees in downtown Toronto won’t be demolished to make way for a new subway station anytime soon.

Trees on the site of Osgood Hall in the University Avenue and Queen Street area were to be removed by Metrolinks as part of plans to build the Ontario line.

The state transit agency said five historic trees would have to be cut down to place the station at the intersection.

After opposition from many, including Toronto Mayor John Tory, Metrolinx agreed to allow a third party to participate in the plan. He said he would go ahead with the plan.

Now both the Ontario Law Institute (located in Osgoode Hall) and state transportation say they will allow the trees to remain, at least temporarily.

“Metrolinks has now agreed that this removal is not necessary to facilitate an archaeological evaluation of Metrolinks’ proposed Ontario line station,” the Ontario Law Association said in a statement Tuesday.

In a statement sent to Global News, Metrolinx said it had found “another way” to continue construction.

It is unclear how long the grace period will last.

The law association said the green space’s future “remains uncertain” and explained that the relief was “temporary.”

In its statement, Metrolinx also implied that its latest developments may not be permanent. It said that “archaeological work could begin on the future Osgood station site before the trees are cut down.”

The Department of Transportation did not answer questions about the tree’s long-term future.

The Ontario Law Institute has issued a statement “to pursue all reasonable options to reduce or eliminate the impact of the development of the Ontario line on Osgood Hall and its premises, while balancing the complex needs of Toronto and the region. We will continue to discuss.”
