Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov out of September’s Davis Cup final in Spain

Vasek Pospisil will headline the Canadian men’s team in the round-robin Davis Cup final in Valencia, Spain.

Alexis Galarneau, Liam Drax, Gabriel Diallo and Clive Harper were also named to the team by Tennis Canada on Monday.

The tournament is September 13-18. Canada will play in Group B against Spain, Serbia and South Korea.

Pospisil is the 145th-ranked Canadian on the team and has a Davis Cup record of 22-22 (singles and doubles). The Vancouver native helped Canada reach the final in 2019.

The announced roster does not include Canada’s two top-ranked players on the ATP Tour, Felix Auger-Aliassime (9) and Denis Shapovalov (21).

The International Tennis Federation announced last April that the world’s sixth-ranked Canadian team was the top loser in the 2022 qualifiers and said goodbye to the final.

Future tournaments will introduce new formats. Each of the four groups will play a round-robin stage in a separate city, with the top two from each group advancing to the final phase.

The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will take place in Málaga, Spain from November 21-27.
