Astros Tucker steals and throws home in Pitchcom’s breakdown

Houston — Thursday night, New York Yankees starter Luis Severino was thrown out when Kyle Tucker in Houston tried to steal a house while tinkering with a broken Pitchcom device.

Alex Bregman had just hit a two-run double to raise Houston to 2-0, and Tucker was third with two outs in the third inning.

At Yuri Gurriel’s turn at bat, frustrated Severino uncapped and put Pitchcom’s speaker in his ear, but apparently couldn’t hear the instructions from catcher Jose Trevino.

Tucker saw Severino distracted and tried to sneak into the house. Severino had a PitchCom earpiece in his right hand and he had to steer quickly to get it back into the hand throwing baseball. He threw it home with his cap, and his throw barely beat Tucker and finished the inning.

The PitchCom digital pitch calling device, which sends a signal from the catcher to the pitcher, was introduced in the majors this season. The system was designed to stop sign stealing following the Astros 2017 scandal.
