‘Welcome to Chippendales’ costume designer reveals ripped pants are more complicated than viewers think

Viewers are flocking to Hulu’s new crime drama Welcome to Chippendales, streaming on Disney+ in Canada.

The series stars Kumail Nanjiani (“Silicon Valley”) as Somemen “Steve” Banerjee. Banerjee is an immigrant from India who has become the unlikely founder of the world’s most successful male stripping empire. .

Set in the late 1970s, the series meticulously recreates the disco-driven era in every detail.

“Welcome to Chippendales was a very research-intensive project,” said Peggy Schnitzer, the series’ costume designer. Ladies’ wear daily.

According to Schnitzer, that research involved skimming through vintage photo books and watching movies set in the ’70s, ’80s, and early ’90s.

“The background team did a lot of research, up to 100 people a day,” she said. “When I watch an episode, I think, ‘Wow, that’s a lot of work.'”

One of the surprisingly intricate aspects of Schnitzer’s costume design was the ripped trousers used by male dancers in clubs.

“We have a system that rips your pants,” Schnitzer explained. “I’m lucky to have met Christopher Peterson in his ‘Magic Mike’ costume. I called him when I booked ‘Welcome to Chippendales.’ Pants that tear are very technical. ”

Each pair was custom-made for each actor to ensure that the ripped pants ripped exactly as intended.

“Then I have to calculate how many pieces of snap tape to use to design the piece, which varies a lot from man to man,” she said.

“We had a lot of time trying to make it look effortless, and a lot of rehearsal time practicing the shirt and pants tearing scene,” Schnitzer added. “There were no real disaster situations during rehearsals when it came to practicing these songs, but it was definitely a very tough situation where we wanted everything to work and go smoothly.”
