Amber Heard on Johnny Depp slap: ‘NEVER BEEN HIT LIKE THAT’
Heard testified that she knew she ‘had to leave him’ and teared up as she admitted she didn’t.
Amber Heard admitted that when she fell for Johnny Depp, she fell hard.
Dressed in a navy blazer and blue dress shirt, the actress took the stand on Wednesday to shed light on the lead up to the couple’s short-lived marriage. In the early years, Heard said, “there was an electricity” during their time together.
Depp, 58, is suing his 36-year-old ex-wife after she penned a 2018 op-ed claiming to be a survivor of domestic abuse. While not naming him, Depp maintains the The Washington Post article irreparably damaged his career and led to a slew of cancelled film projects, including a sixth Pirates movie.
The pair met in 2009 when filming The Rum Diary in Puerto Rico. Heard said that while their early interactions were flirtatious, they each were in relationships.
“I just remember feeling intimidated,” she said of her time with him on the set of the film. After shooting ended, Heard said she “didn’t hear from him for a long time.”
Depp tried to court her afterwards, sending lavish gifts to her home.
“He sent me a beautiful dress, one that I wore in the movie … he sent me a few gorgeous, expensive, what I can only assume are expensive, collectible items, books … guitars.”
The two reconnected in the fall of 2011 when it came time to promote the movie in a press tour that lasted over a month and took place in different cities around the world.
“We did a normal press day (in Los Angeles), and at the end of it I was invited up to Johnny’s room to have a drink with him and the director of the film,” she told her lawyer Elaine Bredehoft. “As soon as I got there, Johnny said Bruce (Robinson) wasn’t going to make it. He asked about my relationship … he had split from the mother of his kids. Then we drank red wine and continued to talk and the talking became us (reconnecting). We sat on the couch and we talked. It felt like there was an electricity to the room. It was instant again.”
When she left, Heard added, Depp kissed her “and I kissed him back.”
For the next month, Heard said the twosome fell in love with one another.
“It was a beautiful and strange time,” she said. “We were going from one city to the next and … we were falling in love.”
After Depp spent the night in her hotel room during one stop, “for the rest of the press tour it was on. I’ll put it that way.”
Heard said that as their relationship progressed, they couldn’t get enough of one of another.
“It was always intense,” she said. “When I was with him, I felt electricity in my body, butterflies, I couldn’t see straight. It felt like to me at the time there wasn’t any love like that … I fell head over heels in love with this man.”
But as they forged a bond, cracks began to surface.
Depp, Heard alleged, would overindulge in alcohol. Soon after, they started fighting and he became verbally abusive about her outfits.
“When he first started drinking, I didn’t think anything of it,” she said. “I tried to not talk about auditions. He would make these comments about me ‘whoring myself out’ … it felt really dirty to be an actor, never mind that he was one.”
The Aquaman actress recounted a moment in which she tried to show off an outfit she wore to a red carpet event, hoping for a compliment.
“I wanted him to say something … When I brought up the dress and the event, he said, ‘The whole world saw that, kid.’ My dress was low-cut, I get it, but I felt embarrassed and horrible that I wore that.”
Heard then started to paint a pattern of behaviour in which Depp was prone to outbursts that veered between violence and niceties.
“He threw a glass at me,” Heard recalled. “It didn’t hit me, but it shattered behind me. I remember thinking, ‘It could easily have hit me.’ He would throw glass or hit the wall. Then he’d disappear and get clean and sober and say he was done … He would go back to this unbelievably nice, sensitive, interesting, funny man.”
Bredehoft then asked Heard about the first time she was physically hit by him.
“It’s so insignificant. I will never forget it. It changed my life,” she said softly. “We were sitting on the couch, having a normal conversation and he was drinking and I didn’t realize at the time that he was using cocaine … he’s drinking and we’re talking and he’s smoking cigarettes. I asked him about the tattoo on his arm. I didn’t know what it said. It looked muddled. I asked what it said, and he said, ‘Wino.’ I laughed because I thought he was joking and he slapped me across the face.
“I laughed because I didn’t know what else to do. I just stared at him, laughing still … he said, ‘You think you’re a funny bitch,’ and he slapped me again. I stopped laughing because I didn’t know what else to do.”
She continued, “I had never been hit like that. I just stared at him. I didn’t say anything or react … I just stared at him. He slapped me one more time, hard. I lost my balance and all of a sudden I realized that the worst thing happened to me that could happen … He just hit me.”
In that moment, Heard conceded that she knew she “had to leave him” and teared up as she admitted she didn’t.
“I wish I could say I walked out of that house and drew a line for myself … I just looked at the dirty carpet trying to will myself to get up. I stood up and looked him in the eye and before I know it, he starts crying. I had never seen an adult man cry … it’s weird. He said, ‘I’ll never do that again. I thought I put the monster away.’ He seemed so sorry.”
She said Depp appeared contrite. “‘I would rather cut my hand off than lay it upon you,’” she recalled him saying. “He had that way of talking, almost like poetry … I wanted to believe him, so I chose to. I believed there was a line he wouldn’t cross again and that was it.”
He bought her a couple of cases of Vega Sicilia wine as a way of trying to make amends. But Heard said he quickly started drinking again, accusing her of having affairs with old partners and co-stars.
“The screaming at me was the worst,” she said.
As the relationship continued, confrontations between the pair continued to escalate, with Heard alleging several instances of scary behaviour including a moment where he twisted her friend’s arm and dangled one of their dogs out of a moving car.
“He grabbed his teacup yorkie and held Boo out of a moving car,” she said. “He was howling as he held the yorkie out of the window. I didn’t want to do anything to cause him to react and drop the dog.”
In another occurrence, Heard tearfully detailed a “cavity search” Depp carried out when he was looking for drugs. He also allegedly punched her and threatened to kill her.
But she continued to stay in the relationship, breaking down as she called Depp “the love of my life” and “my soulmate.”
“But this other thing would come out and take over,” she said. “No one was honest with him. He would pass out in his own vomit … he’d walk around saying he didn’t have a problem … and I wanted him to get better … I looked at this man twice my age and I saw hope.”
During his testimony last month, Depp asserted that he never hit Heard and has alleged she was the abuser during their relationship.
Several key witnesses have bolstered his claim, including Malcolm Connolly, one of Depp’s bodyguards, who recounted instances where Heard berated him calling him a “f—ing coward.” He also said that he noticed that Heard seemed to want to “wear the pants” in the marriage.
In audio played for jurors, Heard also admitted to once having started a physical fight with Depp. “You didn’t get punched; you got hit. I’m sorry I hit you like this, but I did not punch you,” she told Depp. “I did not f—ing deck you. I f—ing was hitting you. I don’t know what the motion of my actual hand was. But you’re fine. I did not hurt you. I did not punch you. I was hitting you.”
In 2020, Depp lost a libel case against Britain’s The Sun for calling him a “wife-beater.”
After three weeks of hearings, High Court judge Andrew Nicol concluded Depp had violently assaulted his ex-wife, putting her in fear of her life.
Heard outlined 14 instances of violence when she said the actor choked, punched, slapped, head-butted, throttled and kicked her, with Nicol finding 12 of her accounts to be true.
Depp’s attempt to appeal the verdict in 2021 was denied.
Heard has launched a defamation countersuit against her ex alleging that Depp and his legal team defamed her by referring to her abuse allegations as a “hoax.”
