Allen makes 45 saves as Canadiens beat Flames in Monaghan return
Cole Caulfield broke the tie in the third period as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Calgary Flames 2-1 on Thursday, while Sean Monaghan recorded two assists against his old team.
Rookie Juraj Slavkovskiy also scored his fourth goal of the season, scoring for Montreal (12-10-1). Montreal have won seven of their last 11 games.
Elias Lindholm scored the only goal for Calgary (10-10-3). Flames is 1-3-1 in his last five fights.
Jake Allen made 45 stops and improved to 7-8-0. Jacob Markstrom, who was tested only 19 times, saw his record drop to 8-6-2.
The Canadiens, who were tied 1-1 in the third set, got a power play six minutes into the period when Andrew Mangiapane was sent off in the rough. , he grabbed Josh Anderson from behind and the two exchanged words after the whistle.

Markstrom’s early mistake angered home fans, but he responded with a Bronx heckle when he shot from far on the Bronx’s next save.
Calgary beat Montreal, 12-6, in the opening game, but couldn’t beat Allen. Their best chance was a breakaway from Blake Coleman with two minutes remaining, but Allen made a pad stop.
Monaghan’s Beloved Return
Monaghan waved to the crowd when he was recognized in a video tribute and given a standing ovation during the first television timeout.
He played 656 games over nine seasons for the Flames. After completing his second hip surgery, he was traded to Montreal in the offseason.
