Letter: Climate activists need better tactics than targeting works of art

Article content

We have to deal with the negative activity of some so-called climate activists smearing food on works of art (even if these works of art are protected by glass overlays).

Such cheap propaganda honors the hard and important work done by concerned scientists, citizens, and even some politicians to raise the climate crisis to the point of urgency. Hurt.

Such stunts are not part of the tradition of legitimate civil disobedience and dabble in nihilism. Having security guards scrutinize art gallery visitors and patrons won’t do anything to advance climate change.

Moreover, this kind of nihilism can easily degenerate into even worse mistakes. Broken promises, greenwashing, the slow pace of change to achieve carbon neutrality, and much more are frustrating, but we have to tackle them with the cards we have been given and hope.
