Alfa Romeo’s lap involved in a terrifying first lap crash at the British Grand Prix

Silverstone, UK — Zhou Guanyu was caught up in a horrific first lap crash on Sunday, with a safety crew joining F1’s only Chinese driver, and the British Grand Prix stopped immediately.

The car on the lap slid upside down across the gravel, and his Alfa Romeo seemed to be sandwiched between the fencing and the tire barrier at the first corner. The race was flagged red and one of the drivers involved in the crash, George Russell, sprinted from his car to the tire barrier to check the lap.

Team manager Beat Zender told German broadcaster Sky Sports that Zhou was talking and was being taken to a medical center in Silverstone.

Russell seemed to have been beaten from behind at the start and was knocked in on the lap. Zhou flew across the gravel trap, over the tire wall and towards the holding fence. The car was slipping on a “hello” that protected the driver’s head.

The F1’s governing body, the FIA, said Zhou and Williams driver Alex Albon were medically valued. Albon was spinning into the wall of the pit.

“Both drivers are conscious and evaluated in the medical center. Further updates will be given in due course,” the FIA said.

The driver returned to the pits and waited for a restart. The time for that has not yet been announced.
