Teck donates $5 million to BCIT INSPIRE campaign, The Canadian Business Journal

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, October 3, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — BCIT and Teck Resources Limited (TSX: TECK.A and TECK.B, NYSE: TECK) (“Teck”) today announced that Teck is proud to announce its BCIT INSPIRE campaign . This donation, the second-largest total campaign donation to date, will support campus redevelopment and new teaching and learning innovations, as well as expand the use of antimicrobial copper across BCIT’s campuses.

Of Teck’s contribution, $1.4 million will go towards funding the recently completed Health Science Center (HSC), which will also feature the Teck Copper Café. The new building will help BC train new medical professionals each year.

The remaining $3.6 million in Teck’s donation will support the new $220 million BCIT Trades and Technology Complex. Upon completion, the new complex will build capacity for 700 new full-time student spots per year that will help meet the growing demand for skilled trade professionals in British Columbia over the next decade. The complex features state-of-the-art learning tools and energized spaces that promote integrated learning and simulate real-world environments.

Additionally, through Teck’s ongoing copper and health program partnership with BCIT, Teck has now installed 1,595 antimicrobial copper surfaces on high-contact surfaces in 11 buildings on the BCIT Burnaby campus, including downtown, Anasis Island, and the Aerospace Technology Campus.

Installing an antimicrobial copper surface provides an additional layer of protection for students, staff and faculty, creating a safe environment that limits the spread of contagious diseases. Copper has unique antibacterial properties, proven to kill up to 99.9% of harmful bacteria within 2 hours of contact. When installed in high-touch, high-traffic areas, antimicrobial copper can help reduce the spread of infection.

The products contributed to this project, known as Coptek’s Copper Clean, are manufactured in Canada.
