Members of the House Transportation, Infrastructure and Community Committee are scheduled to meet Monday to discuss a request from four members of the committee to initiate an investigation into airport delays and flight cancellations.
The House is not scheduled to reopen until the end of September, but it can meet if at least four members of the committee from at least two different political parties request it.
Toronto’s Pearson Airport in particular has seen months of flight cancellations and significant delays to travelers. In July, the airport ranked the world’s worst for flight delays, according to data from FlightAware, a flight-tracking site compiled by CNN Travel.
The head of the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) provided an update on Friday on “progressive progress” in reducing wait times and cancellations.
GTAA President and CEO Deborah Flint said the situation was “slowly improving” with security, customs and parcel waiting times decreasing.
“There is certainly still a long way to go, but these efforts are bringing about improvements,” Flint said. She added that the reduction in waiting time may be small, but it is measurable.
Flint said the number of on-time flights increased from just 35% a few weeks ago to 44% on Friday. She also said Canadian Air Transport Security Agency data shows that 82% of her passengers are currently being screened within 15 minutes.
