About 500 new housing units approved by Kelowna City Council

The Kelowna City Council approved 490 homes at its meeting on Tuesday (August 23).

Winnipeg-based Ironclad Developments plans to build 400 units in five buildings on the corner of Springfield and Ben Vaughlin roads across from Orchard Park Mall. Earl. Charlie Hodge said he hopes the council will get what is proposed.

“I’m a little concerned that it’s a fairly small space, even if there is some green comfort,” he said.

Hodge also told the developer that he hopes the project will be suitable for children and families.

The council also approved development permits for a 90-unit building on Bellaire and Chandler streets. The project includes 12 micro-suites, 30 Bachelor’s degree units, 24 one-bedroom, 22 two-bedroom and two three-bedroom suites.

Earl. Luke Stack said he was impressed with the design of the building, noting its uniqueness as it is not square.

“And I’m happy that there are only three development variances, which is good news. It’s a nice addition to the neighborhood.”
