Abbotsford Teen Wins North American Bagpipe Competition
The Abbotsford teenager took first place in all three events and won the overall championship at the prestigious North American Bagpipe Competition in Ontario.
Recent Yale graduate Callum Bevan competed in the George Sheriff Memorial Amateur Invitational Solo Piping Competition in Hamilton, Ontario on November 19th.
His older brother, Alistair, won the competition in 2017. These two of him are the only brothers to each win the event.
Bevan started piping at the age of 7 under the tutelage of his parents, Alan and Bonnie.
He was a member of the Robert Malcolm Memorial Pipe Band for several years and qualified for the 2017 World Pipe Band Championship.
In September 2019, Bevan was invited to join the Simon Fraser University (SFU) pipe band to participate in all four events of this year’s World Pipe Band Championship.
His brother and parents are also members of the band.
Bevan is a BC Pipers Association Grand Aggregate winner at all levels including the top amateur grades.
He won the piobaireachd event of the Nicole Brown Memorial Invitational Contest on his first attempt in 2021 and was a finalist at the MacGregor Memorial in 2021 and 2022 at the Argyllshire Gathering in Scotland.
Bevan also won the Piping Hot Summer Drummer songwriting contest, the world’s largest bagpipe and drum school, placing second (behind his brother).
Bevan is enrolled in the Chemistry program at SFU.
