Abbotsford School District and Partners Fill Backpacks and Cupboards for Back to School

The back-to-school shopping season can be a time of anxiety and stress for many families.

To ease the burden, a group of Abbotsford community partners and business sponsors work together each summer to help fill desks and cupboards for those in need.

Over the past four years, the partnership has helped more than 20,000 children in Abbotsford, filling their backpacks with school supplies, hygiene products, dry and fresh baskets, and a $25 gift card from a superstore.

School is still a month away, but the deadline for families to register is Friday, August 5th.

A back-to-school event will be held on August 27th in partnership with the Abbotsford Archway Food Bank, Hope City Church, The Salvation Army Center of Hope and Relate Church.

“According to a recent study, the average Canadian family spends $709 on back-to-school supplies,” said Andrea Senft, the district’s manager of community partnerships. “This is out of reach for many families. Our goal is to prepare children for their first day of school while freeing parents from the stress and anxiety of these costs. We believe that we are giving children better health, better mental health and a greater ability to succeed in the school year.”

In 2019, B.C. food banks recorded 124,713 visits, of which 38,074 were by children. This represents 30% of food bank users, of which 14% are currently employed and a further 3% are recently employed.

This event was made possible by many community sponsors, individual donations and the support of Rick Hansen Secondary Leader students Pari Khanna and Keshaw Dubai.

This is a registration-only event. If the program can support your family, please complete the registration form by midnight on August 5th.
