Bruce Power explores production of cancer-fighting medical isotope Yttrium-90 for global distribution, The Canadian Business Journal

TIVERTON, ON, Oct. 3, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Bruce Power today entered into a partnership with Boston Scientific to explore the feasibility of manufacturing the cancer drug Yttrium 90 (Y-90). announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with in that reactor.

The company is a major producer of cobalt-60, which is used to sterilize about 40% of the world’s single-use medical devices, and is looking to expand its production of cancer-fighting medical isotopes.

“The growing global demand for medical isotopes is an opportunity to strengthen Ontario’s leadership in this innovative field. I am proud of our progress and excited about the future. Radioisotopes are saving lives and Ontario is poised to become an isotope superpower,” said Ontario Energy Minister Todd Smith.

TheraSphere™ Y-90 glass microspheres, manufactured by Boston Scientific, are a targeted liver cancer therapy consisting of millions of microscopically irradiated Y-90 glass microspheres used to treat malignancies of the liver. It’s medicine. Through this partnership, Bruce Power will be key in ensuring that Boston Scientific customers and their patients have access to a reliable supply of Canadian-made TheraSphere devices currently sold in 30 countries. play a role.

said Peter Pattison, President, Interventional Oncology & Embolization, Peripheral Interventions, Boston Scientific. “We are delighted to have Bruce Power’s support in expanding our network of trusted supply chain channels, which will enable more people around the world to fight liver cancer through accurate and effective Y-90 therapy. We can continue to help more patients.”

Production of lutetium-177

Additionally, Bruce Power will soon become the first reactor operator to commercially produce lutetium-177 through its innovative Isotope Production System (IPS). The IPS, designed and manufactured by Isogen (a partnership between Kinectrics and Framatome), was recently installed at Bruce Power’s Unit 7 during a planned maintenance outage. IPS is the first-of-its-kind solution for producing short-lived medical isotopes in a commercial nuclear reactor, providing unprecedented capacity, redundancy and scale for medical isotope production. Isogen will also collaborate with Bruce Power and Boston Scientific on the feasibility of producing Yttrium 90 using IPS.

“The installation of an isotope production system to produce lutetium-177 is a major milestone and we will continue to look for new ways to use our reliable radiation capabilities to further expand production of medical isotopes in Bruce to fight cancer. is equally exciting, said Peter McDiarmid, Director of Isotope and Site Energy Development, Business Development and Energy Innovation at Bruce Power.

Partnership with Saugeen Ojibway Nation

To support the global fight against cancer, Sogen Ojibway Nation (SON) and Bruce Power establish a new isotope infrastructure to market new isotopes and create new economic opportunities within the SON space continue to work together to As noted by Veronica Smith, Chief of Chippewas for Nawash Unceded First Nation, this partnership will provide an essential source of much-needed medical isotopes for cancer patients in our communities, across Canada, and around the world. Offers.

“Our community embraces these technologies and partnerships to generate medical isotopes that help fight cancer around the world,” said Thorgene First Nation Chief Conrad Richie.
