NEW YORK — Two Florida residents pleaded guilty to a plan to sell diaries and other items belonging to President Joe Biden’s daughter to conservative group Project Veritas for $40,000, prosecutors said Thursday.
Amy Harris and Robert Kurlander have pleaded guilty to conspiracy to transport stolen goods interstate, the office of federal attorney Damian Williams in Manhattan said.
“Harris and Kurlander attempted to profit by stealing someone else’s personal property, and as a result are now being convicted of felony federal charges,” Williams said in a statement.
A request for comment has been sent to the attorneys for Harris, 40, and Quarander, 58, of Palm Beach and Project Veritas.
Authorities have not identified Ashley Biden or the organization that made the payment, but details of the investigation are in court filings and an official statement from Project Veritas.
When Ashley Biden moved out of a friend’s house in Delray Beach, Fla., in the spring of 2020, she kept diaries, tax records, digital devices with family photos, cell phones, and other items there. prosecutors said in court filings.
They said Harris moved into the same room, stole items, contacted Kurlander, contacted Project Veritas, demanded photos of the material, and paid for two copies to bring to New York. .
They said the woman had stolen the items and had contacted other defendants. The man who contacted Project Veritas asked for pictures of the material and paid the two to bring it to New York.
Project Veritas staff met with the pair in New York and sent them to Florida to retrieve more Ashley Biden items from their homes. .
The activist group, which describes itself as a media outlet, paid each of them $20,000, prosecutors said.
Project Veritas says it received a diary from a “tipper” who said it had been left in his room. The activist group handed over the journal to law enforcement and said it had done nothing illegal.
Founder James O’Keeffe said Project Veritas ultimately did not release the diary information.
Project Veritas is best known for conducting hidden camera sting operations that embarrassed the press, labor groups, and Democratic politicians.
